Welcome

WELCOME TO BREWING FROM SNAFU

Hi,

I'm Bob Barnes, the former President of Southern Nevada Ale Fermenters Union homebrew club. I assume since you're reading this that you've already started homebrewing. Well, if you haven't yet made it to one of our club meetings I urge you to do so. Our club meets twice a month. We meet the second Friday of every month at Mr. Radz and we have 'roving' meetings usually towards the end of the month. The end of the month meetings are very informal and usually take place at bars that let us bring in our own beer and eat their food for practically nothing.

I was amazed to find out how many home brewers are out there that don't belong to a homebrew club. But after thinking back to when I first got into brewing I remember how intimidated I was to share my first batches with other experienced home brewers. And admittedly my early brews were nothing to get excited about. But realize that we've all been there. And we've all become better brewers by learning from other brewers' experience and mistakes (and I've made them all). I also remember being hesitant to attend my first homebrew club meeting because I wouldn't know anyone. Being somewhat of an introvert it took a lot of courage to show up at that first meeting. It helped too that I dragged a friend along so I'd have at least one person to talk to. It turned out to be not as scary as I thought and people even complimented my homebrew. I didn't leave knowing only one person, and since that night I have continued to become a better brewer with the help of other more experienced brewers (some who have been brewing for over 20 years). I also find I enjoy hanging out with others who share the same interests as I do.

I can honestly guarantee that if you come to one of our meetings you will not be ignored. And don't be shy about bringing your beer, even if it's your first batch. Personally, I consider it an honor to taste someone's first batch of beer. It's like sharing in the birth of someone's first born.

Our club is a very active club. We have at least two activities every month. In addition to the twice a month meetings, we also have campouts, hikes, bike rides, and picnics. We also have participated in various local and regional beer festivals. We also have an annual homebrew competition called Winterfest that takes place on the weekend between the NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl. Our contest for the past two years has had more entries than any other homebrew club west of the Mississippi.

Next time you're in Mr. Radz check out our bulletin board. There's a schedule of our events, a copy of our most recent newsletter and membership application forms. And by all means come and check out our next club meeting. Also feel free to call me or e-mail me. My phone # is 242-3301 and my e-mail address is LVBobB@juno.com

Happy Brewing,

Bob Barnes
